Sarah McLachlan FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions | Lilith Fair
These are the questions most frequently asked by the Sarah fans who have emailed me. So to save both you and I time and energy, I have decided to post these questions with the answers that I see best fit. Some answers, such as song meanings, are my opinions and have nothing to do with Sarah or her label.
- Where can I get the Christmas album with 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' that Sarah sings with the Barenaked Ladies? Sarah McLachlan and the Barenaked Ladies sing 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.' on the Various Artists Christmas album by Nettwerk Records. You can get the album right here at Amazon.com. Also on the Christmas album is Dido and Tara Maclean.
- "Did Sarah write the song, "Dear God?" Does she believe in God? Is she religious? Why should I listen to Sarah's music when she sings a song which is against my religious beliefs?" I get a good number of questions like this so I decided to answer them here. First of all, I will start off by saying that Sarah did not write that song. It was written by a group called XTC. Sarah only sings it. As far as knowing what Sarah's religion is or if she believes in God, I really do not know. But in order to answer the last question, I will answer in my own words: I do not believe that you should rule out a whole singer or album just because of one song that you do not care for. There is not one human being in this world who is perfect, or who doesn't think dark thoughts occasionaly. I personally believe that there is a God, but I am not 'extremely' religious. I grew up with very open-minded parents. My parents believe in God, but they raised my sister and I with the option to learn about different religions and choose a religion that we felt more comfortable with, if any. I have been to many churches with my friends throughout my life growing up, including a church where the kids there got drunk and crazy every Saturday night and then went to church on Sunday mornings acting as if they were perfect humans in front of their parents and the church. It does not matter how religious you are, you are not perfect. Maybe at one point in your life, you became upset with God or doubted God. Maybe it was a time in your life when you may have lost someone that you really cared about, and in the first stages of your grieving you felt anger at God, and maybe it went away a split second later and you were suddenly just sad. The song 'Dear God' was written by a member of XTC who appears to be athiest and who is expressing how something that is supposed to be so good can allow such bad things to happen in the world. (Just because a person does not believe in God, does not mean that person is evil. Many athiests are very logical thinkers who require more proof than others to believe in something.) The song is asking God why He kills us with disease, why He lets so many starve, and why He stands by and watches as we fight and kill each other. This is just a song. Although we do not know why Sarah chose to sing this song, we can assume that maybe she chose to sing it during a low point in her life, when she was feeling distressed about the conditions of this world, and she wanted to share these feelings with others in a song. No one should take this song too personal or change their entire view about Sarah based on this one song. If you pay close attention to the words, it isn't really anger and hatred about God and all of the good things in life, it is frustration with the ugly things in life that we do not understand, and expressing that frustration in a song.
- "Where can I find the lyrics to the song "Silence" by Sarah and Delerium?"
Well, actually, I just added them to this site. You can see them here. ;o)
- "What is that song by Sarah that I hear on the TV show Roswell?" Although I do not usually watch Roswell, my best friend Lori is a Roswell guru, and here is her answer to your question: "Fear" off of Mirrorball is the song that was playing when Max saved Liz. That was in the first episode. The theme song (song at the beginning of every episode) is by a singer named Dido. It is the song called "Here With Me" on their CD called No Angel (the cd ROCKS!). If anyone has anymore questions or comments about Roswell, please contact Lori. She would love to hear from other Roswell fans!
- "I was at this club last weekend and heard a song by Sarah that goes "...when the rage in me subsides, in this silence..." What song is that?: This is a song that Sarah sings on Delerium's album "Karma." The song is entitled "Silence." A great song! Also, on that same album, Camille Henderson, Sarah's backup sings "Duende." The whole album is just awesome. I have it and listen to it all the time. I would definitely reccomend it. You can get the single of this or the whole album at Amazon.
- "What does the song Angel mean?": This one I get asked a lot. I have heard (from several different resources) that it is about drug addiction. Someone said that on a radio station interview a while back, Sarah stated that she wrote Angel after reading an article in Rolling Stones about musicians dying from drug overdoses. I think it can mean many things to many different people. I guess that is for you to decide, depending on how it makes you feel and what it makes you think about.
- "What does the song Adia mean?": This one I get even more…Ok. Just a simple analysis. I am not sure what this means either. In my meanings section, I posted what Sarah said on her VH1 special about Adia. She said, "This is about my problems in dealing with feeling responsible for everyone else." I am guessing Adia is the name of a female. A lot of people ask me of it’s a romantic song about Sarah and another female. This I am not sure of. Whatever the case, it is a beautiful song.
- New Info about Aida's meaning from the Sarah fan, Marisa: "i read this on an interview with sarah
in a newspaper article about lilith fair. adia is about a bunch of different
things, but one of the main things the song is about is her relationship with
her best friend. apparently, a while before sarah and her husband ash got
together, he used to date her best friend. then, when they did get together,
sarah and her best friend's relationship was very rocky for a few months
because of the whole "dating your best friend's ex" situation. i
guess on
storytellers, sarah was trying to be very general and ambiguous about it.
also, when sarah performed on the rosie o'donnell show, she said she needed a
woman's name because she didn't want to use that person's real name. she
found the name adia while watching the credits at the end of a movie and she
liked the way it sounded, or something like that."
- "What album is I Will Remember You on?": This was released as a single, it is on B-Sides, Rarities, and Other Stuff,it is on the soundtrack for The Brothers of McMullen, and it is on Sarah's brand new live album, Mirrorball, which is featured in my Amazon Books and Music Store. You can purchase the album online and have it sent to your house if you wish.
- "What is Sarah Mclachlan’s sexual preference?": I think this should answer your question – She is married to Ashwin Sood (her drummer) and plans on having a family soon.
- "Do you know how I can meet Sarah?": Maybe in the early 1990’s this wouldn’t have been such a hard goal to achieve. But seeing that she is global now and that millions of people would also like to meet her, unless you have connections to people that know her, then I don’t think it’s a real possibility. Then again, I could be wrong. All I can say to this is, "Good luck!"
